Left on Houston, Right on Sweaters

With autumn fading into fall, the season of knits and hot apple cider is among us. To help warm our frames as the leaves begin to drop in their final wind swept dance towards the earthen floor is the company Left on Houston, whose new line of cozy sweaters has recently been featured in local Mercer stores.
Left on Houston’s title came from Houston Street, a road named after a Delegate to the Continental Congress that divides the borough of Manhattan. It is a east-west thoroughfare that cuts down the fashion capital like a zipper, dividing all that is fashion, art, culture, and design of the modern and the venerable.
Left on Houston walks the line of modern and old fashion and then strays left into freedom of creativity and new age design. Their fall line epitomizes this direction with Victorian-esque, mildly ballooned sleeves placed on demure classic cardigans and a turtleneck re-worked on a vest for dramatic flair.
Each knit in the collection is named for something not uniquely New York but reflective of it, with titles such as Central, Uptown, and Landmark. The sweaters may have been born of New York sketches but their function and design cater to the drizzly winters and sweater loving Seattleites. Paired with our favorite flat boots and skinny jeans, you will find warm and cozy solace underneath these well-designed knits. Some favorites of mine include the Connector, a cape style vest with a button front and a high collar. Bought in a light grey, this piece can be paired with black or dark blue skinny jeans and tucked into boots of your choice. Wear a plain long sleeve underneath for a classic look or pair it with a subtly hued fall print and make a style statement.
If you want a sweater that you can throw on and feel fashionable in a moment you might want to choose the Bridge, a ¾ length kimono sleeve sweater with reverse seam details and gold buttons. Coming in a trio of colors, the copper brown hue is the most striking. With three weeks left before I take that 14 hour plane ride overseas to Australia, I have begun to wonder what all may I need to entertain myself for those slowly ticking hours, and more importantly, what will I put it all in?

Has Kate been sporting them around town without my knowledge?).
Following much of the same trends as Forever21, Top Shop is stock full of jersey tops, tunics, and style hits and misses, and like Forever, you have to dig and search to find that gem of a piece for a fraction of what it would have cost you elsewhere. Lucky for you, this little style scout has done the hard work for you! I have come up with two adorable must have ensembles that will make you the cutest thing this side of January. With shift dresses still finding their way into stores this spring, snatch up a pair of patent leather Mary Jane heels from Top Shop to spice up those shapeless dresses. Add a pair of leggings or tights and some fun jewelry and you will be making those dirty skater boys shift around in their seats to get a better look at you!
Whip lash inducing outfits are allowable with the sprint weather breezing in (though still out of sight for those of us in the stormy northwest), so snatch up this dainty blouse from Top Shop, add a pair of cropped jeans and printed flats and you will have all of the necessities a girl needs to be stylish in the coming months. I Heart Melie Bianco Handbags!

I first discovered Miss Melie Bianco’s handbags at a small boutique in my college town. After leaving my favorite shop and school behind for the west coast and my adventures abroad, I was worried I would never again find a store that carried my much beloved line. But, luckily I have become an Internet search maven and my endless and tireless search for these handbags has finally come to a (sigh of relief) end.
Melie Binaco Handbangs have a wide range of style and personality that I haven’t found in many of the more expensive name brand handbag lines, most of which rely largely on reformatting their print and color scheme for every new season. Bianco’s handbags line is diverse, both in type and style, and this variety allows one to shift through the styles and pick one that fits their personality and needs. With affordable pricing, ranging from $45- $70, these handbags will allow you to carry more cash in them than you spent on them.

My personal favorites? First and foremost, this patent leather shoulder bag in wine. The color is amazing and trumps the standard black and brown handbags that are so prevalent (though I am victim/investor to and in this trend as well). Colorful handbags, though they seem hard to match to clothing, should be not be over thought, but if you love the bag and not the color, it comes in cream, black, and white as well. Though, if you are looking for a bag that makes an impact utilizing colors that will match more of your wardrobe, consider this beige contrast tote. Already have something to tote all of you mini goodies (i.e. cell, lipgloss, etc.) during the day? Pick up one of her evening clutches to stylishly stash all your necessities. Her multicolor clutch in grey or camel is a great and unique (in a good great grand wonderful way) and has a removable chain, so you can either carry or tote your bag in your little hand or on your little shoulder, whichever you please.

Fun and Fancy Free Flats!

With Australia on the horizon, and a great deal of traveling ahead, I decided I had better find myself some comfortable, bright, and fun shoes to sport during my time down under. With leopard and cheetah dominating the printed shoe scene (guilty of owning flats in both prints), I decided to buy something a little less standard and a little more fun and fancy free to add some pop to my basics. First pair in my cart? A set of blue floral print mary janes. Made with basic cotton and rubber soles, these almost slipper-like shoes will add a girlish touch to my wardrobe and give some of my darker tops a little burst of color and fun. Paired with skirts or jeans, and also featured in black, red, and leopard prints, these fun and easy shoes will make an impact on my wardrobe, and for $14, they won’t make one on my bank account.
For those unaware, Australia and the U.S. have opposite seasons, which means that fall fashion is just hitting the stores there as we speak. Keeping this in mind, I chose a pair of navy ballet flats with a white polka dot print. With nautical inspired wear sailing into stores for our upcoming spring, these navy flats will suit the style of all you fashionable girls here in the US, while helping me to be stylish as the Aussies go back to school. At $40 dollars, these flats are mid-range price (mid-range for this lowly intern who works for free) and are so versatile and interchangeable with the seasons I would have paid more for this find.

For a girly girl as irrational as I am, I was very reluctant to pick up a pair of sneakers for my semester abroad. I don’t think I have worn a pair of tennis shoes outside the gym since high school! But, knowing that adorable (and practicable) sneakers were out there, I continued my search and was very happy for it. I found these pretty and fun 80/20 printed slip ons. With a heart printed on one shoe and the stripes continuing on the other, these original slip ons were perfect for this on-the go girl.

If you New Year’s resolution was to save money, I have the style bargains the year. The Must Have Dress

My New Years resolutions? 1. Eat my vegetables, 2. Make time for yoga, 3. And of course, add to my wardrobe! The first thing on my list? Day dresses! With Australia on my horizon and hot weather in my future I decided the best addition to my closet would be a bevy of day dresses. My dress obsession? Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent metallic jersey slip dress. But unfortunately for this lowly unpaid intern, the $145 price tag is a little out of my league. Adorable alternates are out there and my latest discovery, bluefly.com, had the perfect substitute, this BCBGirls grey jersey ‘Tania’ embellished dress. In a standard color, this dress has a number of style possibilities with the help of colorful tanks, accessories, and cropped jackets. Pick up one of these adorable day dresses and pair it with leggings, a cropped jacket and boots, and continue to sport it well into spring with colorful tanks and a pair of flats. With work, class, and going out on the town, these versatile dresses will take you from place to place with style, and with all the personality you choose to add.

New Year, New Dress

I showed you the shoes, now here are the dresses. New Year’s Eve is the perfect occasion for not only making those skater boys drool, but to also start a fresh new year with a daring new look. Daring and irrational at best, I have chosen a few gorgeous, cold weather un-friendly pieces for you to dress up in to dazzle and delight those dirty boys. From my newest obsession, mycatwalk.com (schooling me on the fashion of Australia), is this adorable Ruby Smallbone dress. It’s pink, shiny, but not overdone, and paired with some chunky gold bangles and a cropped jacket to ruff it up a bit, this piece will take you out on New Year’s and continue to be a great and versatile piece in your closet well into summer.

Now that Christmas has come and gone, finding the perfect New Years outfit is next on your agenda (along with making those dirty skater boys who don’t deserve you drool with the dazzling outcome). For those who want to sparkle (literally) and shine and be the best and brightest style star of the night, consider wearing a pair of shimmer or glitter flats to ring in your new year. They will brighten your casual outfits in the year to come and be a style statement for the night paired with your chosen bowed, shift or otherwise dress. My Right Hand Man

What ever would I do without my Prada medicine bag? When my friend sprained his ankle drunkenly jumping off his 3rd story balcony into the 16 inches of snow accumulated during the night at my much beloved Midwest university, my beautifully big bag (don’t you love alliteration?) came quite in handy. After the doctors checked out his ankle ( and his head after I strongly suggested it), I was able to fit his shoe, my 12 lip glosses, snacks for our 4 hour emergency room wait and of course, my flats I stow in my bag for when the night has gone late and my feet can’t keep up. For all my fellow interns and otherwise, an oversized bag is a must. Today I carried my Macbook Pro, my brown bag lunch (cliché’ but hey, I’m picky) and my thermos of peppermint tea all in my bag. Though big bags come in very handy when wanting to tote any amount of things stylishly, picking the right one for you should depend on two things, your size, and of course, how cute the bag is. If you are petite, -5’ to 5’3’’ a bag such as the new square Coach patent leather purse would be about the right size bag to be slug on your dainty little shoulder. For us lil’ ladies who range from

5’4’’-5’6’’, a size bigger, such as the Prada medicine bag or the (way) less expensive tan medicine bag from urban outfitters would be two great choices. Finally for those girls who stand statuesque above us rest, you are able to carry any size bag your little hearts desiree, like this amazing red bag from Nordstrom.

Aside from using these stylishly large bags to tote your stylishly small phones, you can use them as a mini closet. For this little blonde intern, transitioning from day to night and wanting to make an impact both on my bosses and my boy(s) seems to be a difficult task, but carrying an oversize bag (a.k.a. mini closet) helps with the transition.

Ever Daring

For a lowly intern, the newest Betsey Johnson jewelry is slightly out of my league (not to mention Patrick Dempsey...although I’m foreseeing trump-esque hair come 60 : / ). The ever daring designer’s jewelry line pieces mix a variety of elements; metal colors, charms, and jewels, to create unique pieces that are romantic with an edge and saucy (like my use of the word saucy?) For all my other lowly unpaid interns or otherwise, here is an adorable substitute from delias.com. Wear it over a flowy navy tee or tank, skinny dark jeans, with an animal print wedge. Practical but Stylish

For a fashion forward intern looking to be practical but stylish, I was lucky enough to stumble upon the perfect site, frenchsole.com. They have the most adorable ballerina flats I have ever seen! They have a variety of colors including these little lavender ones, and if you are looking to complete your mod look this winter, these black and white polka dot flats are perfect for that head to toe look. The rasberry glitter flats are for the brave, but paired with a subtle white sweater, jeans, cute pink argyle socks, and some gold bangles, they will draw all the right attention.

Snag a pair of leggings..not tights

The evolution of leggings has left us with tights this winter. Tights bring a new element to an outfit but a lackluster sex appeal, so for those of you looking to wow your man or potential ( if he's lucky) man, I veto the tights look for the more skin ( though little) revealing leggings. Though it's winter my vote always is for open toe shoes because 1. I am impracticable and 2. Closed toe shoes are for work not fun! Here are my two new favorite finds from my beloved Nordstrom. Though I do cherish my bang for the buck finds, I couldn't help but fall in love with this Jaloux Silk Chiffon Tunic and BCBG's newest patent leather heels with big gold buckle accents. Sometimes you have to splurge on yourself, you've worked hard this year!

Accessory Junkie

There is no such thing as too many headbands, just as there is no such thing as too much caffine. Headbands are everywhere this season and I just can't seem to get enough. The running count is now at 12 ( !) and I dont know when this addictive behavior will stop and I am reluctant to go cold turkey on the habit. Headbands of all styles, widths, and material can be seen everywhere but my favorites I have picked up have been from nordstrom and urban outfitters. Just yesterday I added two more headbands to my collection; one white, one black, both skinny, velvet and accented with a dainty bow to the side. This style of headband is perfect for my new intern ballerina bun 'do and will help keep my angel hair fly-aways out of my face as I concentrate very earnestly on my research project. I have also seen belted style bands, which if found in patent brown leather ( think the new patent leather coach bag in chocolate), could be the final addition to my growing collection. Or maybe not.





As I was musing on the topic of headbands with my younger sister, a bright idea sprang into my little blonde head. I was commenting on a headband I saw Britney Spears wearing during her much publicized outings with Paris Hilton; a black band with an oval of diamonds placed at the side. I wondered outloud if I could manage to make one similar, seeing as I could not find one online, though I had searched and searched. As I looked online I remembered an old wrap skirt I had bought a winter ago that had been accented with a broach, so I headed to my closet, threw clothes over head and finally found it! I pinned it onto an old fabric headband and voila! A new chic headband perfect for the holidays! My little sister graciously posed as my model ( best hair class of 2007..beaming with pride of course.) and as you can see, with little material and a bit of imagination, one can make a big style impact.
